News

New this month, a grand walk along Harting Down in West Sussex, and three obscure Hampshire churches:

• All Saints', Little Somborne, last resting place of pioneering British aviator, Sir Thomas Sopwith,
• St John the Baptist, Upper Eldon, tiny and very remote, and
• St Mary's, Ashley and the scant remains of Gains Castle.

Also in Hampshire, Broadlands, home of the late Lord Louis Mountbatten, and a gazetteer entry for the plaque commemorating Droxford Station's role in the D-Day landings.

New this month are a couple of places in Hampshire:

• The Meon Marsh Sea Lock and the Titchfield Canal and
• A short entry for Warblington Castle;

Two places in Gloucestershire:

• Gloucester Cathedral and
• The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway;

And Raglan Castle in Monmouthshire, South Wales.

Four new places in Hampshire this month:

• The pretty little St Mary's Itchen Stoke,
• The Diving Museum in Stokes Bay, Gosport,
• Explosion - Museum of Naval Firepower at Priddy's Hard in Gosport and the nearby
• Royal Clarence Victualling Yard.

Together with three new walks:

• Farlington Marshes, a walk for birdwatchers and lovers of traffic noise,
• The confusingly named Old Winchester Hill and
• From Hardway to Gosport town centre.

Only two new places this month, both in Hampshire:

• Gilbert White's House and the Oates Collection in Selborne and
• Hinton Ampner House and Gardens.

New this month in Hampshire:

• Southsea Castle in Portsmouth, Hampshire, together with a gallery of other Southsea photos,
• The Grange at Northington a grand house that has lost its park and
• Staunton Country Park, a park that's lost its grand house.

New this month, three new pages on places in Winchester, Hampshire:

• Winchester Cathedral,
• Wolvesey Castle (The Old Bishop's Palace) and
• The Great Hall of Winchester Castle with the magnificent Round Table. Along with a gallery of various other places around the city.

Also new this month Fishbourne Roman Palace in Sussex, and a number of additions to the Hampshire Gazetteer, including:

• The Jolly Sailor's Funicular,
• The memorial to the TS Mercury and
• The Nelson Monument on Portsdown.

New this month two places in Dorset: Mapperton House and Gardens and the Sherborne Steam and Waterwheel Centre.

And one in Hampshire: The Hovercraft Museum in Lee-on-the-Solent.

Two more places in South Wales to start this month off:

• A full page on the Roman Fortress at Caerleon including the amphitheatre, the baths and the barracks, and a
• Short item on the Newport Transporter Bridge.

Followed by three gazetteer entries in the Forest of Dean:

• The Great Western Railway Museum, Coleford,
• The wreck of the MV Nibley and
• The nearby Severn Railway Bridge Disaster Memorial.

Together with longer articles on the Dean Forest Railway and Hopewell Colliery, together with a short walk to find the Darkhill Ironworks.

Happy New Year everyone! This month there are four new places in South Wales:

• Chepstow Castle,
• Tintern Abbey,
• Skenfrith Castle and
• The Kymin.

Turns out that there was a lot more needed doing to get ready for Christmas than I had bargained for.

A belated Merry Christmas to all! Sorry about the lack of updates.

Should be a lot more this month as I am now settling in to my new place. First up this month:

• The Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway and
• Blaenavon Ironworks both in South Wales.

It's likely to be another thin month this month as I am still tied up with the move. Still at least it's mainly packing, not paperwork.
