The Mweya Peninsula, a roughly 10km square wedge of hilly land joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, is the main tourist focus, containing, not only the park headquarters and staff accommodation and the up market Mweya Safari Lodge, but also various more modest places to stay and a pleasant cafe open to all.

It is all the more surprising, therefore, to find that there is also a wealth of habituated wildlife in the area, particularly the birds, which show about as much fear of humans as London pigeons.
