I was almost tempted to go to a service at St. Mary's Church, Whitby just to see how the modern congregation coped with old fashioned high-sided box pews.

The interior is absolutely crammed with them, covering virtually the whole floor space and hanging off all the walls. There is even one above the chancel arch that was used by the Cholmleys of nearby Abbey House.

Whilst the oldest parts of the church date back to 1100, it has been so hacked about and extended in every direction over the centuries that it would be a lifetime's work to unravel it all.
