The biggest of the lakes (and the longest in England), Windermere is also the busiest and the noisiest, although the introduction of an overall 6 knot (10 mph, 16 km/h) speed limit since we were there must have helped things.
The main centres of population and tourist infrastructure are the twin towns of Windermere (which changed its name from Birthwaite when the railway came) and Bowness-on-Windermere.
These are situated about halfway down the eastern shore of the lake. Although not unattractive, and useful for supermarkets and souvenirs, both are fairly down-market and quite untypical of the rest of the Lake District.
