"both are fairly down-market and quite untypical of the rest of the Lake District." A particularly unfair comment unless you regard Keswick, Ambleside, Grasmere and Hawkshead as idyllic havens of peace and tastefulness. They are all jam-packed to gills with ambling visitors and without much of the jolly charm of Bowness.
